*Correspondence: Azizullah Azizullah, Department of Botany, Kohat University of Science and Technology, 26000 Kohat, Pakistan e-mail: [email protected] Pollution of aquatic environments with natural and anthropogenically produced substances is one of the major environmental problems of the world. In many countries the decreasing quantity of water coupled with its increasing usage in multiple sectors has adversely affected water quality and caused problems of water pollution. Polluted water has been a main cause of adverse effects on plants, animals and humans throughout the world. Physicochemical analysis of water, which is a common method used for quality assessment of water, alone may not be enough as it cannot evaluate the impact on living organisms. Therefore, bioassessment of water and wastewater quality is considered to be essential to reflect the ultimate effects on living organisms. Many organisms like bacteria, algae, fish, invertebrates and protozoan are used as bioassay organisms for assessment of water quality. This review article elucidates the use of Euglena gracilis, a freshwater motile flagellate of the phylum Euglenophyta, as a suitable organism in ecotoxicological studies with special emphasis on its gravitactic orientation as a sensitive end point in ecotoxicological assessment of water pollutants.

Impact of a high magnetic field on the orientation of gravitactic unicellular organisms--a critical consideration about the application of magnetic fields to mimic functional weightlessness.

The gravity-dependent behavior of Paramecium biaurelia and Euglena gracilis have previously been studied on ground and in real microgravity. To validate whether high magnetic field exposure indeed provides a ground-based facility to mimic functional weightlessness, as has been suggested earlier, both cell types were observed during exposure in a strong homogeneous magnetic field (up to 30 T) an...

High Light-induced Sign Change of Gravitaxis in the Flagellate Euglena gracilis is Mediated by Reactive Oxygen Species

Euglena gracilis responds to abiotic stress factors (high light, salinity, heavy metals) with a sign change of its gravitactic behavior. This phenomenon is oxygen dependent and can be suppressed by the application of the reductant dithionite. It is not mediated by the photoreceptor since also blind mutants change their movement behavior upon high light exposure. It is also not mediated by the c...

Control strategies for the polarotactic orientation of the microorganism Euglena gracilis.

A simple mathematical model for the signal received by the dichroic photoreceptor molecules in the motile alga, Euglena gracilis, when irradiated by polarized light, is described and used to test hypotheses for the control strategies employed by the microorganism during negative phototaxis. The model is used to analyse and explain the experimental results of Häder (1987. Arch. Microbiol.147, 17...

Effect of Several Solutions Including Mineral-encaging Zeolites on the Restoration of Cell Motility of Tributyltin-intoxicated Euglena gracilis Z.

To examine the detoxification effect of mineral-encaged zeolites on cells impaired by pollutant-intoxication, we used a bioassay system involving Euglena gracilis Z as the model organism and TBTCl as a pollutant. TBTCl exposure causes Euglena cells to quickly change shape from a spherical to spindle form, with the process being reversible by detoxification. Taking advantage of this morphologica...
